This paper focuses on a new Wireless LAN developed in the framework of the WIND-FLEX project, sponsored by the European IST program. Medium Access Control and Dynamic Link Control protocols are described with respect to their functionalities and the implemented algorithms. The main emphasis is on the Connection Admission Control algorithm, which is devoted to guarantee the preventive control of the supported traffic. A low-cost estimate of the so-called Effective Bandwidth (or bandwidth requirement) of multiplexed connections is proposed, based on statistical characteristic and the Quality of Service requirements of traffic applications. Results of computer simulations are presented to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm.
